Big night for Canada at the AMERICAN Music Awards

Posted by cirvine on November 21, 2016

They might be called the American Music Awards but last night’s event was all about Canada.  The Canadian takeover started with a ton of nominations, including The Weeknd, Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendes, and Justin Bieber. And lest we forget our boyfriend Drake, whose 13 nominations broke Michael Jackson’s previous record for most nods in a single ceremony in 1984. You started from the bottom and now you are here, sir.

Then we started #winning. Stratford’s own Justin Bieber and Toronto-born Drake each won 4 awards at the fan-voted show, becoming the biggest winners of the night. Bieber won some of the top prizes of the night: Favourite Male Artist Pop/Rock, Favourite Song Pop/Rock for Love Yourself, Video of the Year and Favourite Album Pop/Rock for his album, Purpose.

Drake swept the Rap/Hip-Hop category, winning Favourite Artist Rap/Hip Hop, Favourite Album Rap/Hip Hop for Views, Favourite Song Soul/R&B for Work with Rihanna, and Favourite Song Rap/Hip Hop for Hotline Bling. He covered all the bases in his speeches, thanking (of course) Toronto, his fans, his dad, and also congratulated his Degrassi co-star Nina Dobrev on her success, who handed him his first award of the night. Drake, your manners do Canada proud.

And just to firmly solidify our love for him, Drake released his hilarious new commercial for Apple Music during the show. It features him working out to Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood, which plays on her own Apple Music commercial where she sings his hit Jumpman while running on a treadmill. Check out Drake’s commercial below:

The night was also blessed by some amazing performances from our Canadian popstars. Shawn Mendes, who was up for new artist of the year alongside Alessia Cara, did a heartthrobbingly-good back to back performance of Treat You Better and Mercy. The Weeknd, who was up for 3 awards that night, performed his new hit Starboy and absolutely killed it.

We also caught up with Justin Bieber on his world tour and let him serenade us with his huge hit Let Me Love You—a song I don’t think I will ever get sick of.

All in all, the night was totally owned by Canada and we couldn’t be more proud of our hometown heroes who are killing it in down in ‘Merica. Well done guys and gals. You fully deserve the recognition.
