Defining IP

A static IP address is a number that gives your Internet connection its own identity on the Net. Without a static IP you are a virtual unknown. This means that you have a dynamic IP address, one that changes every time you connect. A static IP address is your permanent address online. It allows other servers to recognize you and it gives them an address to go to if they want access to your specific connection. Compare this to call display on a regular phone. Every time you call, the same number shows up, letting the caller know it’s you. more

When the Internet was first created the idea that an unlimited number of IP addresses would eventually be needed, was never considered, and thus the number of addresses available is limited. The solution to this is to have an IP pool of dynamic IP’s that each person accessing the Internet can draw from. When that same person drops their Internet connection, the IP address they are using goes back into the IP pool, making it available for someone else to use.
