Tips To Keep Your Kids Safe Online

I'm sure we all can recall the time when computers, video games, social networking sites and instant messaging programs were a thing of the future. In this technology-driven world we live in, our kids spend hours online each day and it may be difficult sometimes to keep an eye on them. Here are some helpful tips to follow to help keep your kids safe online:

1. Set clear rules for Internet use and keep computers in an open area so that it is easier to supervise yor kids.

2. Encourage your kids not to share personal information such as their real name, address, phone number, or passwords.

3. Instead of giving away their real name, tell your kids to create an online nickname.

4. Make sure your pop-up blocker program built into your Internet browser is turned on.

5. Install a parental control program that will allow you to create a profile for each member of your

household allowing each person to have different controls- so that your 8-year old can't see the same things as your 15-year old.

6. Encourage open communication with your kids so that they will tell you if something or someone online makes them uncomfortable or threatened. Stay calm and remind them they are not in trouble for telling you.
