Help keep broadband competitive!

The issue

Telecommunications networks in Canada have been built, over decades, by incumbent providers like Bell and Telus who were provided a federal government supported monopoly. Once these networks were built, and the telephone companies were well established, the government implemented rules to help create healthy competition.

One of those rules was to require Bell and Telus and other incumbent telephone companies to allow competitors to connect to their networks at prices that were regulated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). This allowed Canadians to have a choice of provider for their telephone and other telecom services.

But unfortunately, now that may change.

There has been a recent appeal to the Federal Cabinet – that if approved – would limit access to these networks and allow Bell, Telus and other large providers to set whatever prices they choose for competitor access to their networks.

So what’s the impact on you?

If the appeal is approved, these providers will be able to drive down the level of competition. And… without competition, you will have fewer choices of provider, higher prices and a potential decline in service quality.
