What does Red & Blue mean to you?

Unfortunately for most consumers, it means they may have been forced into believing there are only two choices for telecom services in Ontario. And really - who could blame them? Everywhere you turn, every media channel, every touch point- there they are: Red & Blue, digging into their endless pockets and spending millions to bombard and ultimately confuse consumers.

Red & Blue’s media domination have limited the perception of choice for consumers in Canada. This is both arrogant and presumptuous, yet far too many people go with these two Goliaths without exploring the available alternatives. What nonsense: as you well know, there are plenty of smaller providers which are smart, lean, nimble, customer focused, and proud of what we have to offer!

So how do smaller telecoms beat Red & Blue, and how do we strive to retain your business?

Price is the obvious. Just who do consumers think will end up paying for Red & Blue’s unlimited marketing budgets and multi-million dollar ad campaigns? Smaller telecoms are sensitive to excessive costs, and seek to operate with maximum efficiency. We have to be smart with our spending. Just like you and your household.

In these technological times, a smaller provider is easily able to match the products and services of a much larger competitor, often implementing and delivering service in a far more timely manner. We don’t have size and clout, so we have to be smart, fast, nimble and highly responsive to your needs.

It’s not hard to see how smaller telecom providers can offer an entirely new world of customer service and accessibility. To us, every one of you represents an important piece of business. We can’t afford to take you for granted. And that means we’ll always treat you with the respect, appreciation, and attentiveness which you deserve.

Finally, our relationships are based on trust and customer focus. Not only do we value your support and your business, we want you to tell us how we can service you better; we need you to push us to be even better. There’s no doubt: it’s easy for customers to believe that they should to go with Red or Blue. But in a world of increasing competition, personal service and technological availability, it’s actually smaller telecoms which are the smarter choice. But then, you already know that.

As always, we value your comments and act on your suggestions, so please email them to: newsletter@execulink.com

1. Spammers get 1 response to every 12 million emails they send (yet it still makes them a small profit)

2. 10 hours of video viewing is uploaded every minute on YouTube

3. Google indexed it's 1 trillionth unique URL on July 25, 2008. That is thought to be about 20% of all the pages on the Internet but a high percentage of the World Wide Web (the public Internet).

Questions from our readers:

Why do I get SPAM emails that aren’t specifically addressed to me? What can I do to stop them?

Even though the e-mail appears to be addressed to somebody else and seems to have been misdirected, in reality, the message was addressed to you (and likely a slew of others as well). An e-mail message has a number of fields in which you can place a recipient's e-mail address:

To: - Self explanatory. The address you want to send the message to.

CC - Short for Carbon Copy. Any e-mail addresses placed in this field will receive a copy of the e-mail, and their addresses will be visible to any and all who receive the e-mail.

BCC - Short for Blind Carbon Copy. Any e-mail addresses placed in this field will receive a copy of the e-mail as well. However, these addresses will NOT be visible to anybody else who receives the e-mail.

So, if I were to send a message to abuse@execulink.com and put your address in the BCC field, both addresses would receive a copy of the e-mail. However, in each copy, it would only show that the message was sent to abuse@execulink.com. There would be no indication that the e-mail was addressed to your own address, and thus, it would appear as though the message was misdirected.

This is a common ploy used by spammers. Typically, such messages are sent to hundreds, maybe even thousands of different addresses. However, if you receive an e-mail with hundreds of addresses in the To/CC fields, you'll likely assume it is junk and delete it outright. To limit the odds of that happening, spammers place the bulk of their recipient list into the BCC field, mostly in an attempt to disguise that a message is obviously spam. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent spammers from abusing the BCC field in such a fashion.

What can you do to stop these SPAM emails?

Unfortunately we can’t stop the spammers from sending these emails, but we can try to block the emails from getting to us. You can try increasing the sensitivity of the spam filters so it picks up more of these emails. The other thing you can do is utilize the rules feature in your email program. The rules feature allows you to make rules so that if the subject line contains a certain word for example, the message is automatically sent to a folder you specify, such as your delete folder. Considering these spam emails don't all contain the same words in the subject line, making rules can be time consuming as there may be a lot of words to enter.
