After an impressive, record breaking year for movies in 2015, the box office line-up for movies in 2016 involves a lot of hype and high expectations. Similar to last year (Star Wars, Mad Max, Avengers and Jurassic World) 2016 relies heavily on remakes of classic movies and the sequels to major franchises. It should be another great year for moviegoers.

Here are 16 movies to look forward to in 2016.

Zoolander 2
Expected Release Date – February 12th

In 2001, we were first introduced to male supermodel Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and his infamous Blue Steel gaze. Zoolander, along with former rival Hansel (Owen Wilson) exposed the fashion industry for its brainwashing and assassination practices, executed by Jacobim Mugatu (Will Farrell).

These three are back for a new adventure, filled with high fan expectations. Not much is known about the plot so far, but we do know that my fellow Stratford-ite Justin Bieber makes an appearance - which should guarantee success based on his current win streak.

Deadpool
Expected Release Date – February 12th

Deadpool is the first of many comic book movies on this list. Growing up I did not personally follow the story of Deadpool too closely, but I do know that fans of this superhero are obsessed and very passionate to see a movie version of this story.

This film stars Canadian Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson who, after learning he has cancer, undergoes experimental surgery transforming him into Deadpool – a superhero with an array of powers and sarcastic humor.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Expected Release Date – March 25th

As a life-long Batman enthusiast, this film is on top of my MUST-SEE list of 2016. Although I did enjoy the last Super Man movie and am thrilled to see the evolution of the Man of Steel – I am mostly excited to see Ben Affleck’s take on the Dark Knight.

The Jungle Book
Expected Release Date – April 15th

The Jungle Book was originally a collection of stories created in 1894 by Rudyard Kipling. We have had many adaptations in both cartoon and live-action form. We all remember the classic Disney cartoon, and now a new generation get to enjoy classic tale.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
Expected Release Date – May 20th

Last time we saw Mac (Seth Rogan) and Kelly Radner (Rose Bryne) and their newborn daughter, they had successfully managed to out-wit the fraternity that lives next-door to them, creating a more peaceful neighbourhood in the hilarious movie ‘Neighbors’.

The sequel, coming out in May, sees a new challenge for the Radners as they deal with a sorority led by Chloe Moretz and Selena Gomez.

Captain America: Civil War
Expected Release Date – May 6th

Not everything is peachy in Avenger-land. After some tension in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) battle it out setting the tone for the next Avengers movie – Infinity War.

I personally found the first Captain America movie to be a little slow, but The Winter Soldier was an undeniably entertaining movie. I expect this movie to be similar to the latter.

X-Men: Apocalypse
Expected Release Date – May 27th

The latest X-Men movie, the gang has to defeat an evil villain named Apocalypse and stop his extinction level plan. As with any recent X-Men movie, this is a very simplified version of the plot as there is time travel, side-taking and other sometimes confusing plot twists, but who doesn’t like a good X-men movie?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Expected Release Date – June 3rd

Let’s give Michael Bay another shot with his second installment of the Ninja Turtles saga – Out of the Shadows. In addition to the heroes in a half shell, April O’Neal and Shredder, this movie introduces us to popular characters Casey Jones, Bebop and Rocksteady.

Finding Dory
Expected Release Date – June 17th

Finding Nemo was released thirteen years ago, which makes me feel super old. Although parents who once watched the story of the lost clown fish have re-watched the movie with their kids, they will now have the opportunity to experience this new story together as a family.

The sequel follows Ellen DeGeneres’ popular (and forgetful) character Dory, as she embarks on a quest to reunite with her mother and father.

Independence Day : Resurgence
Expected Release Date – June 24th

Everyone’s favourite 1996 Summer Blockbuster is back. After an unsuccessful attempt at invading earth 20 years ago, the alien army is back and looking for revenge.

Without Will Smith delivering classic one-liners you may have doubts about this sequel. But who can deny their love of special effects, Jeff Goldblum and inspiring presidential speeches that are all but promised in this upcoming movie.

The Legend of Tarzan
Expected Release Date – July 1st

After years of chest thumping and screaming Ooo-wa-ooo-aaooaaooaa-oo, Tarzan is finally back. This time, our favourite vine-swinger returns to the jungle, after adapting to urban life in London. I will be interested to see what Alexander Skarsgård (as Tarzan), Margot Robbie (as Jane) and Samuel L Jackson can do with this legendary tale.

Ghostbusters
Expected Release Date – July 15th

If your thirsty for late-80’s nostalgia – Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS!!! The poltergeist-fighting team is back, with an all-female cast including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. This movie should not only have the cool storyline and special effects of the previous Ghostbuster films, but also some quality comic relief.

Star Trek Beyond
Expected Release Date – July 22nd

After an amazing first film of this rebooted series in 2009, the Star Trek franchise (which is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this year) lost its focus with 2013’s Into Darkness. This time, with director Justin Lin (of Fast and Furious fame), the crew of the Starship Enterprise look to recapture that old Trekkie magic.

Suicide Squad
Expected Release Date – August 5th

Comic book movies rarely concentrate on the bad guys. That’s what makes Suicide Squad so interesting as it brings together major villains from DC comics, providing a compelling story while at the same time setting up future DC Universe movies. The film also boasts superstar actors/actresses including Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Jared Letto, Margot Robbie, and an almost guaranteed cameo from Ben Affleck’s Batman.

Doctor Strange
Expected Release Date – November 4th

Before writing this post, I did not know much about Doctor Strange. A co-worker (and go-to comic book expert) explained the interesting story. After a career-ending accident, the doctor shatters the bones in his hands. After an operation performed by a sorcerer (of course), Dr Strange embarks on adventures using black magic and alternate dimensions.

Sounds cool, huh? Plus Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the titular character in this film, so that is always promising.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Expected Release Date – November 18th

Attention Harry Potter fans! You wanted more, and now you got it. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (based on the book of the same name) takes place over 70 years before Harry Potter is born and  involves many magical creatures from the Harry Potter universe.

Although the movie theatre might be the best place to watch these movies, if you are an Execulink TV customer, expect to see a lot of these movies on our Video On Demand line-up later this year. You can find a list of available movies by clicking HERE or flipping to channel 100.

Wherever you watch your movies, you’re sure to find some new favourites this year!
