Execulink Presents: The Top 10 Most Viewed YouTube Videos of March
Hello trusty Execublog readers, and welcome to the third edition of our “Most Viewed YouTube Videos of the Month” series! March has been a bit different than the past few months in terms of YouTube content – the video sharing site seems to have been taken over by movie trailers and teasers, as well as videos about the American presidential election. This causes me to ask myself one vital question – is the Star Wars hype finally over?! I must say that I hope this isn’t the case, and that the trend revives itself in April. Maybe it’s just being carbon-frozen for a while until the time is right.
Either way, there are still some pretty great videos on the list, so tune in for your monthly dose of online happenings and upcoming releases!
GHOSTBUSTERS - Official Trailer (HD)
WHO YA GONNA CALL? Probably not Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon, the stars of the new Ghostbusters movie, because people are seriously hating on this trailer in the comments section. It looks reasonably entertaining, but it’s basically impossible to do a remake of a cult classic and not receive negative backlash. People are content in their ways – they’d rather keep Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis forever in their hearts as the only Ghostbusters to ever grace the big screen. The movie comes out in July of this year, so we’ll have to wait and see how it is to make the final decision.
Batman V Superman - Sad Affleck
I burst out laughing WAY harder than I thought I would at this video. Poor, sad Ben Affleck. I want to give him a teddy bear and a hug and send him on his way. The musical overlay matches up so perfectly with the situation, and accurately describes (or so I imagine) how “Sad Affleck” must be feeling after finding out that his movie got terrible reviews. The movie in question, Batman v Superman, currently has a rating of 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 44% on Metacritic. I’m sure this was not the reception that the big-budget action film was looking for, but I hope that Ben can pull himself out of his funk soon, because it’s hard to see him so upset. Brighter days are on the horizon, Sad Affleck.
X-Men: Apocalypse | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX
This trailer looks awesome, so I hope the turnout isn’t the same as the one for Batman v Superman, because we don’t need a Sad-ifer Lawrence or Michael Sadbender on our hands after the premiere. The cast for this movie is seriously stacked – Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Munn, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, James McAvoy…it’s kind of absurd how many stars they were able to fit into this movie, but that makes me all the more excited to see it. It comes out at the end of May, so we’ll have to see if it lives up to the hype!
"TED CRUZ" — A Bad Lip Reading
Yesss, more bad lip reading. I love this stuff. I don’t want to get too political, but the American presidential election has been nothing short of incredibly controversial and dramatic thus far. So I guess it’s nice to get a little bit of comic relief through Ted Cruz, one of the Republican candidates, “saying” that he’s testing out new campaign slogans like “your face isn’t my face” and “that old man just took your spork”. If bad lip reading sounds familiar, you’re right – one of the most popular YouTube videos from our February edition had the same theme, but the subjects were NFL players. Anyways, please just continue to click the suggested related videos, because you’re never too busy to watch hilarious gibberish online.
I had heard of the book with this name before, but I didn’t know they were making it into a movie – and a movie directed by Tim Burton, at that! This trailer totally captivated me from the first few seconds, so I can’t wait to see what the movie brings. It looks like a mix of American Horror Story: Freak Show and A Series of Unfortunate Events, but with a more mythical and even horrifying twist. I kind of want to watch it tomorrow, so I’m a bit disappointed that I can’t watch it until September. I might have to read the book in the meantime!
Priyanka Chopra and Jimmy Have a Wing-Eating Contest
Jimmy Fallon is back on the list! I have to admit that I’d never previously heard of his guest Priyanka Chopra, an Indian actress who plays Alex Parrish in the television show Quantico and will be playing the “villain” in the upcoming Baywatch movie. I learned that she is one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actresses, and that she even won the Miss World pageant in 2000. I’m almost embarrassed to say I hadn’t heard of her, given all of her accomplishments! All that matters is that I know of her now, and I know that she can eat way more hot wings than Jimmy Fallon. Watch the video to see the defeat in action!
Top 10 Worst As Seen on TV Items Ever
If there’s anything you’ve learned about life thus far, I hope it’s that no matter what your struggle in this world, it can be fixed with a product from an infomercial. Whether you want to go bird watching but really hate binoculars, or desire to use your iPad but can’t bring yourself to hold it with your own hands, infomercial products are here for you. One of my all-time favourite things about infomercials is the video footage that comes right before the reveal of the life-saving product that’s being advertised, because it makes humans look completely incompetent. Someone made this video, which depicts the worst day ever using only “before” infomercial footage. Seriously, if this clip was the first thing that a new alien race saw upon landing on earth, they would think we were all a bunch of bumbling fools.
First Textual Experience with Gwyneth Paltrow
The premise of this Jimmy Fallon (yup, it’s him again) sketch is that he and his guest read, or sometimes sing, REAL first texts that people have sent to each other. Things can get really awkward, to say the least. I saw the sketch with Aziz Ansari – star of the show Master of None and author of the book Modern Romance – a few months ago, and it was really funny, so I was happy to see a follow-up! It was only slightly more uncomfortable with the mood music playing in the background. If I’m being honest, I’d say the one with Aziz is funnier, so make sure to check that one out too in order to maximize your merriment.
The LEGO Batman Movie - Batcave Teaser Trailer [HD]
I can’t believe this is the fourth movie trailer on the list! I can’t say I’m angry, though, because that just means that we can look forward to a ton of highly-anticipated movie releases in the next few months. I was actually caught off-guard by the humour used in this trailer – I definitely thought it would be more serious just because of the usual tone of the Batman movies. The studio that produced this movie was the same one that produced all of the previous Batman movies (including Sad Affleck’s latest personal disappointment) as well as the Lego Movie. I’m interested to see what this mix of styles and tones will bring to the table.
Apple TV — The Kiss
First off, I have to say that this commercial doesn’t look or feel like an Apple ad at all. You’re probably used to seeing a solid white background with shiny new gadgets rotating in the foreground, accompanied by some funky music (Exhibit A). But I’m not disappointed – the use of humour in ads usually does the trick! Plus, casting well-known actors like Alison Brie (from Community and Mad Men) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (from Game of Thrones) wasn’t a bad idea either, and is probably the reason the video has so many views.
This brings us to the conclusion of the third installment of our “Most Viewed YouTube Videos of the Month” series. We hope that this series proves that whether you’re into superheroes, music, hot wings, or denim pajamas, YouTube is the place for you.
