How can I fix my slow Wi-Fi?

There is nothing more frustrating than slow Wi-Fi. Luckily, we have some easy steps you can take to help boost your Wi-Fi and get your Internet back to its optimal performance!

Reboot Your Router

The first thing you should do is reboot your modem and/or router. Modems and routers are essentially little computers, and just like your computer, they need a restart every now and then to clear their cache and refresh processes.

Follow these steps to power cycle your router:

Step 1: If you have a separate modem, unplug it first from the power outlet, and then unplug the router. If you only have a router or a combination modem/router, you can unplug that only.

Step 2: Wait at least 30 seconds.

Step 3: Plug the modem back into the power outlet, wait 1-2 minutes, then plug the router back in.

Step 4: Wait for all panel lights on your modem to become green before testing your internet connection. About 4 minutes.

Make Sure Your Wi-Fi is Private

Ensure your router has a strong and encrypted password to avoid any neighbours accidentally using your Wi-Fi network. WPA2 is the strongest and requires a minimum of 8 characters. If you have a lot of guests visiting, consider creating a separate network just for them. That will ensure your Wi-Fi speeds are maintained, even when your house is full.

Reposition Your Router

Where you place your router is very important. Your router should be in a central location and ideally not on the floor. The more walls, doors, floors, and barriers that the signal has to travel through, the weaker it will be. Particular materials like cement, brick, and metal are harder for Wi-Fi to penetrate, but wood, drywall, and plaster are easier. Keep your router away from items giving off electromagnetic waves like household appliances, as well as TVs and stereos.

Invest in a Complete Wi-Fi Solution

You may not have the hardware you need to give your home the full coverage you need. That’s where a Complete Wi-Fi solution can do wonders. What is it? A Complete Wi-Fi system pairs your router with one or more Wi-Fi nodes around your property to expand the range of your Wi-Fi signal in hard-to-reach areas. Not only that, but nodes are super flexible. You can buy more as you need them, move them around whenever you want, and they eliminate the need to run wires in complicated parts of your home.
