Connecting An ADSL Modem

Ensure your modem is placed on a flat surface and at least two (2) feet from your monitor as
the monitor may possibly interfere with the connection. The modem should also be placed
within six (6) feet of the wall jack. Telephone extension cords should not be used to connect
the modem to the telephone jack.

If you are setting up a wireless modem, skip to Step 4.

2. Plug one end of the ethernet cable (the larger cable that came in the modem kit, usually blue
or yellow, see image below) into your computer’s network card and the other end of this cable
into the port labeled Ethernet on your ADSL modem.

If you are using a modem router, connect this cable into the port labelled 1.

3. Next, take the telephone cord that came in the modem kit (see image below) and plug one
end into the ADSL modem port labeled DSL. Take the other end of the telephone cord and
connect this into your telephone jack (in the wall).

4. Telephone filters (see image below) are used to help to block out excess noise and/or static
on your telephone caused by ADSL modems. Filters need to be added to every device in the
building that plugs into a telephone jack, except for the modem. This may include:
telephones, fax machines, satellite dishes, cable television terminal, game consoles, and
answering machines.

5. Plug the modem power adaptor into a power outlet or a surge protector power bar. Then plug
the other end of the power adaptor into the ADSL modem port labeled VAC.

6. Turn the High Speed ADSL modem on using the On/Off switch, located on the back of your
modem. Wait approximately 2 minutes for the Power and DSL Link lights to stop flashing.
