Humans of Execulink: Bob Byrnes

November 23, 2023 Category: Pop Culture

We had the opportunity to talk with one of our longest-tenured employees, Bob Byrnes, about what he enjoys about working at Execulink.  As an employee for over 34 years Bob has seen many changes to the telecommunications industry and helped Execulink to adapt and succeed.  He works as a Field Service Technician and is currently based out of our Burgessville office.  A real family man, Bob believes working at Execulink has tremendously enhanced his life and allowed him to raise his children in a safe and stable home!

Do you have any fond memories of your time at Execulink?

Your day is full of awesome moments when you work with such amazing people everyday, it is hard to pick just one moment that stands out.

Recently I was revisiting a property doing a utility locate.  I had a conversation with the homeowner before beginning the work and noticed they had a golden retriever.  I have a soft spot for golden retrievers and own one myself. The customer mentioned that she was looking to breed her golden retriever.  This jogged my memory and I recalled that the last time I visited this home she had a St. Bernard.  As an animal lover, visiting customer’s homes provides a great opportunity to see many people’s beloved family pets!

Having worked here for 34 years, I have grown very connected to the communities we service.  Customers know me by name when I am out in the field. Having strong relationships with customers enhances their experience and improves my day as well!

Over the course of your time at Execulink, you must have participated in so many changes to our operations, would you be able to describe how change has impacted your work?

There has never been a dull moment in my job.  I can’t say that I have ever woken up and dreaded coming to work.  Execulink has never takena backwards step, it’s always been forward thinking.  Throughout my time as a Field Service Technician I have seen many changes and mergers.  From pots party lines to touch button dialing, fax machines and dialup.  In my early days of telecommunications, we never could have imagined putting a TV service over a phone line but look at us now!  Nothing stays the same and that’s what keeps my job so exciting.

What does your day-to-day schedule look like?

My day-to-day work involves ILEC Cable repairs and installations.  I also run new circuits when needed.  I can do Fibre installs and repairs and also all cable locating.  Throughout my time at Execulink, the most important part of my work is the people I have the pleasure of collaborating with to get the job done.  Execulink provides a family-like environment and I have so many fond memories of people who have worked here for a long time and the new hires that have joined along the way.

Do you have any favourite channels or TV shows?
