10 indicators that it’s time to upgrade your business technology for the New Year.

As 2022 comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what worked and didn’t work so you can make improvements. Your business technology is a category that should not be overlooked. Take stock of what technology you are using today and determine if it’s meeting your business needs.

Outdated technology can seriously hurt your business by reducing your team’s productivity, causing data failures and downtime, slowing or completely halting your operations, and sending frustrated customers to your competitors for better services.

It’s important as a business owner to not be complacent with your business tech. The technology landscape continues to evolve at a rapid pace, changing the way people work and helping to drive businesses forward and remain competitive. One of the most significant benefits of technology is the range of new opportunities it can open up for your business. If you are not adopting or adapting to this new technology, it could leave your business left behind in 2023.

To help with your business technology review we’ve compiled a list of key indicators to watch out for that will help determine if your current technology is due for an update in the New Year.

Top 10 indicators that it’s time to update your business technology

Increased operating cost

Are much of your profits going to your utility bill or maintaining antiquated systems? If so, it may be a sign you need to upgrade your technology. The majority of older business systems tend to use more power than newer energy-efficient technology, and they are more prone to breaking down.

When old systems break down, they are typically more difficult and expensive to maintain because old hardware parts are often hard to find, plus you have to find somebody with the expertise to fix and modify your system.

Modern technology is made to be more efficient, especially cloud-based solutions like VoIP phone systems. VoIP uses the Internet to make calls. This means that VoIP calls can be made anywhere there’s an Internet connection so you don’t need to rely on hardware and fixed Phone lines running through your office building to make your important business calls.

Compared to traditional phone services, VoIP phone systems offer large cost savings. The large upfront costs associated with owning and installing an on-site telephone system, which can cost up to $60/line, are eliminated. On top of these immediate savings, you save significantly over time by removing the need to have staff in-house to operate and maintain the system.

The manufacturer no longer supports the device

Computer hardware and software are not built to last forever. Advancements in technology happen at a rapid rate, and as it does, older systems become obsolete and incompatible. When systems become obsolete, manufacturers will stop offering upgrades and support.

The issue with continuing to use outdated, and unsupported systems is that the longer technology goes without being updated, the more vulnerable it becomes to security breaches.

To keep your business and customer data safe, you should upgrade your systems when you find out that manufacturers are no longer willing to support their products.

Slow speeds and downtime

If your website, applications and software take long to load or are running slower than usual, or your Internet-reliant devices like point of sale (POS), phone systems, and applications crash on a regular basis, this can be an indication that you either need new hardware, new software, or a faster Internet connection.

Businesses need to be able to keep up with customer demands and stay ahead of their competitors and to do that your technology needs to be able to function at top speed. Slow technology slows down productivity, sales, and growth opportunities.

If you have the ability, you should consider upgrading to Fibre Internet connectivity. Fibre is a proven and reliable Internet solution that can help you meet your business Internet needs by improving your operations, your customer experience, and your ability to grow your brand over time.

To ensure network connectivity, providers like Execulink also offer solutions to help maximize speed and reliability and offer a network connection if your primary Internet goes down. Hybrid Bonded Internet and LTE Backup can enhance your connection and give you peace of mind.

Security issues

If your company’s security has been threatened in any way, then it’s time to update your business technology. Hackers look for system vulnerabilities, and outdated technology is one of them. Older technology has older or less compatible antivirus software, putting your customer and company data at risk.

Business growth

If your business is growing in terms of the scale of operations then you should consider upgrading your technology. With an evolving business comes expanding technological needs to accommodate an increase in employees, locations, and other opportunities.

Inefficient processes

Take a look at your current processes that could be optimized with technology. As an example, many companies are still paying someone to answer incoming phone calls to route them to someone’s extension.

VoIP phone systems come with advanced features like auto attendant that route calls for you without the need for a dedicated person to man your phone system all day. This streamlines communication processes, provides a consistent call experience, and in the end saves you money.

Do your research on the capabilities of new business systems, you will be surprised to learn how much automation and productivity-producing features and technology are available these days.

Productivity is slipping

If you are beginning to experience lag times, and less output, this may be a sign that you should upgrade your systems. When you have unreliable technology, employees are unable to perform their jobs as they normally do. A disruption to your team’s productivity can cost you time, sales opportunities, money, missed deadlines, and poor staff morale.

Your team needs tools to help them move seamlessly from one task to the next with little disruption. Upgrading your Internet or introducing cloud-based and unified communications (UC) solutions will help to improve communication across your business, increase connectivity of your staff, including those working remotely, and boost your company morale, ultimately resulting in increased productivity.

Missing features

Older hardware lacks innovations that are available today. If you are finding that your current systems don’t have enough features to keep up with the needs of your operations, then it might be time for an upgrade.

New systems offer new, more advanced features that add functionality or improve upon existing capabilities. Features include everything from call routing, and voicemail to email, call recording, and even the ability to monitor, track and report on call activity, just to name a few.

Poor customer service

Outdated business systems can create various issues, like the inability to connect to your website, dropped calls, poor voice quality, and long wait times. If you’re noticing increasing bad reviews and continuous customer complaints, it might be time to look at new business systems to help increase your customer satisfaction.

Customers have come to expect lightning-fast service, including fast page loads and almost immediate customer service responses. If there is a delay in responsiveness, this could ultimately move your customer to a competitor resulting in a loss of potential revenue.

Implementing a cloud-based phone solution like Hosted Phone or Microsoft Teams Calling can improve your customer service by providing a better call flow, efficient call queues, and call routing. Plus, your employees can work from anywhere on any device, ensuring that calls never go unanswered and no opportunities are missed.

To improve communications and maximize performance ensure your employees have enough Internet bandwidth and speeds to be able to access and utilize the business applications and services they need. Business-grade and Dedicated Internet solutions will provide a strong foundation that will help to sustain a seamless workplace, reducing lag time and increasing download and upload speeds.

Lacks flexibility

If your legacy phone system cannot easily expand its platform to add new users or support branch offices and remote workers, it’s time to look for solutions that can. With many businesses introducing flexible work arrangements and employees no longer centralized in one location, phone system mobility is necessary, and traditional phone systems are not able to meet those needs.

Cloud-based phone solutions allow you to take your business with you, anywhere and anytime. You can customize your call flow based on your business’s specific needs, replicate a dynamic office environment from your mobile device, and take calls if you’re out of the office. Essentially, employees can work from anywhere! This is ideal for remote working as well as for any outbound staff who may be required to travel.

If your business has multiple locations, VoIP solutions enable all of your sites to function as a single organization, even when each site is separated geographically. VoIP also provides a unified management platform and the extension of shared feature sets at each site. With direct extension dialing between offices and remote presence for home office users, phone calls are managed as if all of your employees are in the same physical location even when they’re not.

Case Study – Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show

What is Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show?

New technologies and digitalization are transforming agriculture. Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show gives farmers an opportunity to see and learn about all the innovative and technologically advanced agricultural products and services now available.

Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show is the largest full-scale outdoor farm show in Eastern Canada, taking place annually at Discovery Farm in Woodstock for the last 29 years. The three-day show each September features equipment and livestock demonstrations, crop plot tours, product displays, special events, and the latest innovations in agricultural technology.

Spanning over 100 acres of land dedicated to trade show partners with equipment and crop demonstrations in the field, the event has grown to feature more than 750 exhibitors and 40,000 attendees sharing agricultural innovations first-hand.

THE CHALLENGE

As Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show evolves each year, so does its need for more robust Internet solutions. In 2022, the farm show returned to being in person for the first time since 2019. With that return, the farm show and its exhibitors needed reliable Wi-Fi access to showcase their innovative technologies, conduct e-commerce transactions, use internet-connected devices, and capture attendee data. Without a solid connectivity infrastructure, all of this would be impossible.

The increasing size and scale of Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show have brought many connectivity challenges to past events due to the existing infrastructure not extending far enough to ensure reliable, consistent service and optimal performance to all subscribers. With slow Internet connectivity, this resulted in potential revenue loss and a poor customer experience.

Prior to the 2022 show, access was only required for the exhibitors to connect, but this year, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show also needed to accommodate e-ticketing services and point-of-sale transactions at the entrance gates.

To do this, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show required an improved infrastructure that would increase and guarantee the coverage of their Wi-Fi access across the 100-acre show and provide a higher availability bandwidth to 4k streaming devices over Wi-Fi.

THE SOLUTION

Execulink has brought Internet access to Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show for the past 10 years and was committed to providing an improved, customized solution that would provide the availability, performance, and scalability the farm show required to host the 2022 event and beyond.

Execulink started collaborating with the farm show organizers several months in advance to conduct an analysis of the site’s existing infrastructure and planned a strategic transition to an alternative, more “capacity considered” approach. This approach needed to consider throughput, airtime utilization, and interference on top of an immense coverage area. To adequately provide coverage across 100 acres of land meant that a range of wireless technologies had to be deployed, including dedicated backhaul links and mesh wireless access points (APs) to cover the event’s outdoor footprint. Execulink also leveraged ISP-grade firewall rules to manage all event traffic securely, ensuring all access was kept separate from each other.

Execulink upgraded its access bandwidth and increased the amount of Wi-Fi access points from 11 to 25 at strategic locations around the event site to ensure optimal performance and coverage. Using industry-leading Wi-Fi planning software, they designed and set up a temporary Wi-Fi infrastructure using tripods, complementing a previously deployed Execulink network, ensuring more capacity and keeping radio communications between access points and Wi-Fi devices clear of interference. Out of the 25 APs, 11 were fixed to point-to-point radios as a backhaul and the rest were set up in a staggered mesh with primary and secondary wireless links. This allowed for flexibility in the placement of the APs for better real-time coverage adjustments.

The solution was installed by Execulink technicians two weeks prior to the event which provided adequate time to test and make revisions. The planning and resources allotted behind the scenes and onsite allowed Execulink to troubleshoot and overcome obstacles that were out of their control, set up and configure the installation, and provide onsite support during the show.

“We were extremely happy with the solution and service Execulink provided for Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show in 2022. Execulink communicated the design, plan and implementation schedule so everyone knew what to expect and what they were responsible for. They spent a considerable amount of time planning, which proved beneficial as the team overcame obstacles out of their control and still delivered what they promised. We would highly recommend Execulink for large outdoor events and we look forward to working with them again in the future.”
Carla Vipond
EVP Discovery Farm & Events

THE RESULTS

The Execulink network reliably delivered fast Wi-Fi coverage to support the event network activities, which ranged from POS transactions, e-ticketing services, 4K streaming services, video conferencing, and event data capture.

Exhibitor subscribers received high-speed Wi-Fi including:

• 5 Mbps download | 2 Mbps upload (each device)
• Unlimited usage Sept 13, 14 & 15
• Up to 4 devices connected
• High-density 5 GHz outdoor Wi-Fi
• Onsite real-time troubleshooting

Over the course of the 3 days, the event saw 40,000 attendees, and the connection for e-ticketing and POS was always stable and reliable for taking card payments, ticket sales, and pre-booked ticket verification.
Exhibitors who subscribed to the service were happy with the connectivity, the onsite team commitment, and the quality of service provided before and during the show.

Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show has built a brand around innovation and technology and being able to provide reliable Internet services to the event exhibitors has further increased its brand reputation. The solution is reliable and scalable allowing it to be implemented in future shows. With a proven connectivity solution and dedicated partner, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show organizers can spend less time focusing on Internet connectivity and more time on their farm show operations.

How to Cast from Phone to TV

While smartphones are faster and more capable than ever, sometimes watching videos and playing games on your TV is more comfortable. If you have an iPhone or Android phone, there are ways that you can display your phone screen on your TV, though the method will depend on the age and model of both your phone and your TV. As long as your home technology is somewhat current and you have Wi-Fi, there is a way that you can cast from your Phone to your TV. Let’s learn about the different ways it can be done.

How to Cast to a Smart TV

If you have a smart TV, it is easy to cast from your phone. Smart TVs typically include screen mirroring software that allows you to display your phone’s screen on the TV if both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

The exact place to find screen mirroring will vary between TV manufacturers, so the best thing to do is look up the instructions for your model. Big TV companies like Samsung, LG, and Sony all have pages that can help you find the screen mirroring option. If you have a less common TV brand, you can try looking in the network settings for the TV or see if it shows as a selectable input source.

Once you have set up your smart TV for screen mirroring, you can set up your phone to connect to the TV.

Screen Mirroring from an Android

Once you have enabled your TV to use screen mirroring, the next step is to enable screen mirroring on your smartphone.

Each Android manufacturer has its name for this:

  • Samsung – “Screen Mirroring” or “Smart View”
  • Google – “Cast”
  • Motorola – “Wireless Display”
  • Huawei – “MirrorShare”
  • Sony – “Screen Mirroring”
  • LG – “Miracast”

Each app does the same thing and can be found in the quick settings by swiping down from the top of the home screen. If you can’t find it, try searching in the network settings. Then follow these steps:

1. Once you have found screen mirroring on your phone, enable it so that it can connect to the TV.

2. Search for your TV. It may be on a list, so select the correct one.

3. Tap connect so that your Android phone and TV can find each other.

4. Your Android screen will display on the TV screen once the procedure is complete.

Android phones can also use the Google Home app to use screen mirroring. Just follow these steps:

1. From your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app.

2. Tap the left-hand navigation to open the menu.

3. Tap Cast screen/audio and select your TV.

Screen Mirroring from an iPhone

Apple uses its screen mirroring technology to connect to smart TVs called AirPlay or AirPlay 2. It is not as widespread among smart TVs as the screen mirroring technology supported by Android phones, but most big TV companies have it in their more expensive models. It is also included in Apple TV casting hardware.

Whether you are using screen mirroring directly on your TV or using Apple TV, it is set up much the same way:

1. Open Control Center. On iPhones from 2018 to the present models, this is done by swiping down from the top right corner, while on earlier models, it is done by swiping upwards.

2. Tap “Screen Mirroring.”

3. Search for your TV or Apple TV box. It may be on a list, so select the correct one.

4. Your iPhone may ask you for a code to ensure it displays on the correct TV. Type in the code that appears on your TV screen.

5. Your iPhone screen will display on your TV once the procedure is complete.

How to Cast to an Older TV

There’s no need to worry if you have an older TV that doesn’t support casting from iPhone or Android. If your TV has an HDMI port (included in TVs since the mid-2000s), you can cast to your TV.

You can use a casting stick if your TV has an HDMI port. Casting sticks connect apps and interfaces to your TV that you would find on your phone or tablet. Several options are available, including Roku, or the Amazon Fire TV stick. Apple TV is also a type of casting stick.

Finally, if you do not have a casting stick, you can simply connect an HDMI cable between your phone or tablet and your TV if your mobile device has that capability. Once it is connected, the screen will be mirrored on your TV. This can be the most reliable way to cast since it will work with most TVs and have fewer dropouts or delays than screen mirroring.

While connecting mobile devices to your TV used to be challenging, this is no longer the case. For most TVs, there is an option to cast from your phone, whether that involves using screen mirroring, a casting stick, or an HDMI cable. So, whether you want to watch your favourite TV show or play games, it is easy to broadcast your phone screen onto your TV.

there is a way that you can cast from your Phone to your TV. Let’s learn about the different ways it can be done.

Why Choose a Bring Your Own Device Cell Phone Plan?

Wireless services have become an integral part of Canadians’ lives with Mobile Internet user penetration higher than ever at 93%. And it’s expected to grow to over 98% in 2027. This year, the number of mobile Internet users in Canada is almost 36 million, as more Canadians are using their mobile devices for both their work and personal communication.

It’s obvious when you look at the numbers that mobile devices are essential tools today, but they can also be expensive and complicated with the various plan options available, like pay-as-you-go, prepaid and postpaid (contracts).

But it doesn’t have to be complicated with ‘Bring Your Own Device’

Sometimes known as a Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) or SIM Only plan, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is an option a carrier like Execulink offers. It’s not a new concept, but for many, it’s worth considering if you are looking for value, control, and flexibility.

A BYOD plan is exactly what it sounds like. You already have a phone, so you don’t need a phone from the service provider. You will receive a SIM card, pop it into your current device, and get your service up and running. It’s as simple as 1, 2, and 3.

Why choose BYOD plans?

When you Bring Your Own Device, mobile phone plans are typically cheaper than ones with a phone included. When you buy a phone through a provider, it’s common that the costs of that phone are offset through upfront fees, or distributed within the payment/contract costs.

One of the significant benefits of BYOD plans is that they usually do not require a contract, your payments are month-to-month. This approach is hands down the best choice for plans.

Most plans still offer unlimited calling minutes and text with Gigabyte data options that you can share with family or employees.

  • Execulink offers data packages up to 20 GB. 20 GB is considered a fairly large amount of data for the average person. Data from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) Communications Market Reports on Mobile Wireless Trends show the average data subscriber used 5.3 GB of data each month. Of course, this will vary depending on your activities.
  • You can figure out how to choose the best data plan for your budget by looking at the amount of data you consume in your phone settings. If you need more data, many carriers like Execulink provide Data share plans. Share plans allow family members or employees to share data across multiple lines. This helps you limit data overages and the additional charges that go with it. Not to mention the convenience and control you have when you add your elderly parents or kids onto one bill.

You get greater flexibility with BYOD plans. You’re not locked into any long-term agreements, and you can stop your service and change providers without penalty.

You can continue to use the phone you know and love. With the cost of phones today, why buy a new phone when the one you have already works fine? And, why move all your data to a new phone if you don’t have to? Other phone plan strategies have created this idea in our heads that we must upgrade our smartphones on a regular basis. This however is just not true especially with many newer devices and proper maintenance of your phone.

1. How long have you worked at Execulink and how would you describe your daily activities?

I’ve been with Execulink for 2 years 6 months. My daily activities include calling customers to educate them on our services to help them get started, answering their questions, and always promoting our Link TV services. You can find me in Ingersoll on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and I love working big events.

2. Do you have any memorable customer interactions you would like to share?

It’s always a pleasure when someone that I have never met before comes into my office and opens up about their issues with other companies. I will put together a solution for them that can put a smile on their face and a comfort to their wallet, they come in as a stranger and they leave knowing they can always reach out to me if needed.

3. Who are some of your major influences at work?

Shannon is a great supervisor, always answers any questions or concerns I may have with haste and confidence. Ryan is always great to collaborate ideas with and is a great manager for our entire team. Devon Sero and Jon Preston are great workplace friends I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the years and are always willing to lend time and efforts when it is needed.

How Fibre Internet Can Take Your Business to the Next Level

If you’re exploring high-speed Internet options for your business, Fibre Internet should be on your radar. Whether you want to keep your employees productive, customers happy, or your overall business running smoothly, the Internet you choose can make all the difference. In fact, the Internet you choose is business critical. It may be overwhelming shopping for an Internet connection that matches the needs of your business, so keep reading to learn everything you need to know about Fibre Internet.

At Execulink, we provide high-speed Internet service across southern Ontario. We understand how important it is to our customers to receive reliable service without interruption. We offer 24/7 customer support to help get your Internet running as fast as possible. When shopping for home or business Internet service, it’s best to explore our Internet technologies to find the one best suited for you.

What is Fibre Internet?

Fibre Internet uses cables constructed of a glass or plastic core to deliver the Internet connection to your device. The Fibre optic cables convert electrical signals, which carry your data. This ultimately carries your data more efficiently and faster than copper cables. Fibre optic Internet is typically installed in two ways: the cables are buried underground or can be placed above the ground along telephone poles.

Now that you know what Fibre Internet is, here are six reasons why Fibre Internet can take your business to the next level:

Benefits of Fibre Optic Internet

High speed

An Internet connection often has different download speeds and upload speeds. Typically download speeds are faster than upload speeds. Yet, with Fibre Internet, you can still expect fast upload speeds that are much closer to the download speeds offered in your package. Since the technology has separate channels for uploading and downloading, Fibre Internet allows for simultaneous data flow, resulting in more symmetrical speeds. With steady high speeds up to 1 Gbps, you’ll be able to have confidence that your business will have the Internet connection it deserves.

Less latency

Latency is the amount of time it takes for your Internet signal to travel. Since Fibre optic Internet has effective data travel capabilities, it offers a lower latency than other competing Internet options. With lower latency, your business will stay online, and your employees will avoid frustration.

Supports high bandwidth

If your business engages in high-bandwidth activities online, then Fibre Internet can easily support these needs. Bandwidth is the amount of information your Internet can transmit in a given amount of time. Consider if you or your employees transfer large files, have video conferencing calls, stream videos, or run powerful programs at the same time. If this is the case, Fibre Internet may be the right option for your business.

More reliable

When there is an Internet interruption for your business, it can lead to real costs. However, because Fibre Internet has cables running underground, it’s typically unaffected by harsh weather conditions such as wind, rain, thunder, lightning, and other elements. The only thing that can interfere with a Fibre cable is physically damaging it. It’s also dedicated Internet for your business, which means you don’t have to share your connection with neighbouring businesses, unlike cable Internet connections. This means your business will experience less downtime, and you can have peace of mind that you and your employees can continue important business activities online.

Scalability

The nature of Fibre Internet means that the technology can be scaled easily. With small and light optical Fibres, the strands can be used across business locations because each strand has a large capacity to carry data. With flexible technology, you can think about how your business needs will grow and how your technology setup can grow alongside these needs.

Improved Experience

All the benefits that Fibre Internet offers can make for a better end-user experience for you and your employees. Imagine an Internet connection that can help your workforce power through their tasks with limited downtime. When you support your business with high-performing Internet, you’ll be able to retain your workforce and help them do a better job. Your employees will be happier and have a better experience working for your organization.

Should You Choose Fibre Internet For Your Business?

Deciding if your business should choose Fibre Internet comes down to your company’s needs and budget. If your business activities include things like video conferencing, regular uploads and downloads of large files, or relies on cloud-based software like VoIP that requires the internet to operate, then Fibre is your best option.

Providers like Execulink’s will work with you to secure an affordable Fibre Internet package no matter the size of your business.
